Thank you for reintroducing Fritz Wunderlich, to this world. Although he held the torch for the world of music, I can only say that those who love this man will once again be able to hear him sing when the reunion in the spirit world takes place. My work as a medium can attest to that, and my love for this man's sweetness and sensitivity will continue to kindle the joy in my heart through his songs....and by the way....my heart center really opens when he sings, "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" and "Von Apfelbluten einen Kranz". It seems as if Lehar laid the path only for Wunderlich. One other comment, since someone else inquired how Herr Wunderlich died, I would like to comment that, on one of my CDs, I read that he died as he tripped and thus a fatal blow to his head resulted. I once read that "the good go early, as they have earned it". From my own experiences in communicating with spirits whom I have known while on the earth plane...."life goes on, and, due to our extra density in having a body, we are actually more dead than they are." Although I realize that not everyone who reads this has not had the experiences which I and other mediums have had and probably have some doubts as to the validity of my statements, however, since I DO have the experience, I am very happy to state that Fritz Wunderlich would feel very joyful at knowing that you know he is well and still filling the ethers with his love through song. God bless all those who share the beauty this man gives and has bestowed upon us.

I am delighted to find this site; it helps to know I am not alone in my appreciation of this wonderful artist. I have two cd's of his Lieder and wonder if a listing of all his work is available. His pharsing, diction, pronunciation, giving full value of time to each note is a combination not found all in one individual which makes Fritz Wunderlich unique in my mind.

FW was my introduction to the beauty of the human voice when I received an LP of Dichterliebe as a wedding gift. I am no longer married, but I still love Fritz. Through him I came to love Lieder and eventually opera as well. I have many recordings and several videos, and the biography, which is excellent if one reads German. I have many favorites, but one special track I recommend is the aria from "La Dame blanche" on an EMI CD. Thank you for the wonderful homepage.

I am an aspiring tenor and have found no better model then Fritz Wunderlich. He truely had the finest voice that I have ever heard. I would someday like to think that I too, even though I'm young at this point, could be such an outstanding performer, and vocal master. Thanks for the memories, and the standard in which you exemplified. Jeffrey Manns

Hi, Andrea! I'm delighted with your web-page on Fritz Wunderlich. His voice is still a delight even after all these year. I'm glad he is not forgotten. Just a note for all the cd collectors: DG has a five cd set (opera, operetta and lieder) at budget price. And I can highly recommend it. This set will give newcomers to Fritz Wunderlich a very comprehensive view (or should I say voice) of his art. Andrea, perhaps you could incorporate some listening samples in to this page. That would be a bonus.

The name Fritz Wunderlich is not new to me. I heard his song played over our local station DZFE in the past, although I can say I vaguely remember his voice. I have a collection of CD's but, unfortunately, not one of his. I'd grab the first Wunderlich CD I'll find and add it to my collection. At present, I do not have one tenor in mind who I can say is the best and my favorite. I hope I can say that of Mr. Wunderlich, the moment I have one of his rare CD's.

It was the latter part of September, 1966, in Chicago. I was listening to WGN on my car radio--the Wally Phillips morning show. He announced the recent accidental death, in Heidelberg, of a "sensational" German tenor. He then played "Granada," by Fritz. I was absolutely thrilled by the power and clarity of that incomparable voice, and still am, more than a third of a century later. I weep at the thought of how young he was when he was taken from us. It was a profound loss for those of us who recognize this enormous talent for what he surely was: the greatest lyric tenor in the history of the German language. Let us honor his memory, and bow down to his greatness.

It was late September, 1966. I was listening to WGN radio, the Wally Phillips show, at 7:15 a.m. He told his listeners about the tragic death of a "sensational" German tenor the previous week, in Heidelberg. He then played "Granada," by Fritz. I was thrilled by the power of that incomparable voice, and still am, a third of a century later. I weep at the thought of how young he was when he died. It was a huge loss to all of us who appreciate that fine tenor voice. No one else compares.

The first recording of FW I heard was the H-moll messe a new recording in those days at VOX with Margarete bence and Friederike Sailer (I am still looking for a good copy of this record. The best experience I had was in 1990 when I met in Venezuela a director of local POlar breweries. He said I love opera and especially I love one tenor that died early. Fritz Wunderlich ! I said, we are friend since that day. henk visser

Dear Sir, I know the beautiful voice and stylish way of singing of Fritz Wunderlich, I once had invited my friend Michael Theodore to hear him at the Redoutensaal in the Hoffburg in Vienna, unfortunately he was indisposed. What a great shame he died so young. Sincerely, George Grabill Topinges

I see in the July edition of "Classic CD" that FW was rated number 21 in the list of the top 100 singers of the centuary. What a wonderful tribute given the shortness of his career. Incidentally, Pavarotti is 19, and Bjorling no. 1!

Andreas

It is truly wonderful to see so many of the great singers honored on the web. Wunderlich was in the first recording of "Entfuhrung" and "Zauberflote" recordings for DG that I heard as a young collector, and to this day I never tire of hearing his singing. As I feel so strongly about film preservation, I also feel it very important to keep the names of these singers alive for future generations. I want to thank you for your efforts and continue the good work.

Fritze!

Wonderful site for a wonderful tenor. I was lucky enough to live in Kusel-Blaubach from 1996 to 1997 and to make good friends there who taught me about the pride of Kusel, Fritz Wunderlich. Listening to his voice brings back vivid memories of "mein Kusel in der Wald": evenings in the Museumskeller tapping nails in a log, runs through the hills with views of Burg Lichtenberg and Remigiusberg, Spießbraten in a friend's house or the Hube Haus, etc. Wunderlich makes it eternal.

Prima Webseite!

I spent many wonderful evenings when I lived in New Orleans listening to the superb Fritz Wunderlich. This was in 1967-1979. I would love to get that album (CD?), but I do not know its title. On it were:"Allein wieder allein, Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" "Die Zauberflöte: Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön"and also a song or two from the Student Prince. Please write me if you know which album this is, and where I might get another one. (Ex-husband kept it)Great Web Site.

I first heard Fritz Wunderlinch on a DG cassette recording of German folk songs. His contributions were "Annchen von Tharau" and "Still wie die Nacht." I instantly fell in love with his voice. Is there a CD recording of these and others of his folk and pop songs? I own another cassette, also DG, entitled "Serenade," that includes the above-mentioned titles, plus "Granada," "Be My Love," and others, but it's losing its sound quality. I should love to replace it with a CD.

I am very pleased and grateful to you to have been able to read your information about Wunderlich. It was possible to buy a lot of CD's. Do you know something about Pfitzner's: Von Deutscher Seele. Is it somewhere to buy? Please give me a answer if you know this.

I first heard F.W. in 1972 on the BBC singing "Granada", a few weeks later I bought the LP and have been entranced by his voice and enunciation ever since.Through his enunciation I strove to learn the German language so as to have a better understanding of his works.Like Luciano Pavarotti he has the ability to make me burst into tears of joy at the sound of his voice.Thank you for this opportunity to make known my views on him and to read the Wunderful affection that he is still held in by so many people from around the world.

Museum from Mrs. Hinkelmann. The time was to short to hear and see al the nice interpretations of FW. I heard radio performances where he sang Renaissance songs. It was so nice and with such a feeling of style, I think all the young tenors, who want to make a carreer as singer, must listen to this way of singing. After more than 50 years it sounds as it was performed yesterday! 33 years after his dead I never heard a tenor who performed so well as FW, renaissance, barock, oratorium, opera, operette and songs, etc.. He was and is the most completed singer of the twentieth century!

The first time I heard Fritz Wunderlich was in 1963. I was preparing a singers study in a Conservatory in the netherlands. Now 1999, being more than 30 years a musician, I never heard a German singer on the level of Fritz Wunderlich. Every time I listen to him, I admire the simply way he sings, with his wunderful voice, the "Schmelz" on his voice, and his interpretation. The best Mozarttenor I ever heard.

Thank you for developing this unique homage to a great artist and musician and for preserving his memory and legacy. One of the saddest nights of my life occurred at the Metropolitan Opera House during a performance of "Die Zauberflöte." The Tamino was to have been Fritz Wunderlich, a debut that I had been anticipating for years. With no disrespect to the tenor that evening, Peter Schreier, who is a very fine artist, I kept hearing Wunderlich's voice in my head and it made me very emotional. Thank you again for making that marvelous voice resound around the world once more.

I am absolutely astonished to discover this excellent, maybe the best home page. Fortunately it's concern to one of my beloved singers. I discovered him in "Dichterliebe" and nobody, even Fischer-Dieskau met him in this. For a while I died on the road listening this masterpiece: distracted by his interpretation, with eyes looking down, I was going at 100 km speed to a big tree. Half of car distroyed but love for him remained for life. I mention only in 1 Karajan's Schöpfung. This will elevate him to forever. Thanks for this gift,

It is wonderful to see so many fans of Herr Wunderlich, he was the greatest German tenor I have ever heard on recording. I just can't stand some tenor in the opera world compare themselves to this great tenor. And how come there are no Canadian in your guest book?

I am a retired music teacher, former professionsl singer for 22 years, and record collector. I have an extensive collection of records and several video tapes of Mr Wunderlich, who I think had the greatest natural voice of any singer I've ever heard. He and I were born the same year and I am fortunate to have lived this long to expound the virtues of the great singer. His voice at his death was in wonderful shape and he was looking forward to coming too the US to perform at the Met opera where he would have been the sensation that he was in Europe. I was a baritone but the tenor voice has always been a particular of mine. Of other tenors I collect are Jussi Bjørling, Anton Dermota, Kenneth McKellar, Lauritz Melchior, James Johnston, and several others, but there was no one like Wunderlich. One of the many tragedies in the world of music.

Thanks for the memory. I lived in Stuttart in 1958-59, studying at the Hochschule für Musik and was lucky to hear and see Wunderlich frequently, in Verkaufte Braut, Der Mond, Schicksal, Turandot, Zauberflöte, usw. Since I studied piano with a coach at the opera house, I also had an occasional opportunity to play the piano for Wunderlich at rehearsals. His personality was as lovely as his voice.

I discovered the glorious voice of Fritz Wunderlich in 1978. A German friend lent me some old LPs of "Schöne Müllerin" and "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" and this became a landmark discovery in my journey through the world of classical music. What a wonderful voice! Such clarity, tonal beauty, strength and control. For me, music is full of "magic moments" and some of my favourites are moments in Fritz Wunderlich's performances. For example, his "mein" in the 7th last bar of "Dies Bildnis" must be one of the most glorious sung notes ever put on record. And then there's "Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen" snippet from the Christmas Oratorio, the ending of "Mit Würd und Hoheit angetan" from the Creation and various excerpts from "Schöne Müllerin" such as "pflantzen" from "Des Müllers Blumen". The beautiful sound he emitted during these moments and hundreds of others is simply unsurpassed. He remains my favourite male singer (my female choice goes unequivocally to Gundula Janowitz) and despite his early and tragic demise I am thankful for the legacy of recorded peformances that we have. Thank you too for the website.
