Late 20th-century reconstruction of the Elizabethan Globe (1599) at a site near the original theatre. After decades of fundraising and planning, initiated by the American actor and theatre director, Sam Wanamaker (1919-1993), the theatre opened in 1997. Used for Shakespeare plays and other plays.

In 2014, the adjacent Sam Wanamaker Playhouse was opened.
