Built 1902 as "Schauspielhaus" drama theatre by Heinrich Seeling. Opened 1 Nov 1902 with a prologue by Ludwig Fulda, Goethe's "Faust" (prologue and 1st act), and Schiller's "Wallensteins Lager". Severely damaged by bombs in World War II. 1949-1951 rebuilt as an opera house. Major rebuilding 1959-1963, incorporating the opera house in the new "Städtische Bühnen" complex with an adjacent new drama theatre and a common façade (see there for more images after 1963). Further rebuilt after a fire during renovation works in 1987.
