Built 1949-1950 by Walter Engelhardt on the site of the former Saalbau (opened 1904, destroyed in 1943), incorporating some remains of the former building. Opened 14 Nov 1950. 1773 seats. 1951 installation of a pipe organ by Klais (V/P 80). 2002-2004 major renovation and rebuilding. Installation of a piper organ by Kuhn (III/P 62). Main hall renamed "Alfried-Krupp-Saal". Addition of the "RWE Pavillon" foyer building with another hall (up to 400 seats). Re-opened 4 June 2004. Since then also known as "Philharmonie Essen". Used for concerts by the Essener Philharmoniker and for various other events.
