Convention centre and office block, built as the headquarters for the third UNCTAD conference held in Santiago in 1972, named "Centro Cultural Metropolitano (UNCTAD III)". Opened 3 Apr 1972. After the conference, used as a cultural centre. Closed 1973 during the Pinochet regime. Later used as convention centre and Ministery of Defence. Damaged by fire in 2006. Subsequently rebuilt as a cultural centre. 2010 reopened as "Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral" (GAM), named in honour of the Chilean writer and diplomat, Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957).
