Opened 17 Dec 1870 with Rossini's "Otello ossia Il moro di Venezia". Over 1700 seats. Mainly used for Zarzuela performances. Destroyed by fire in 1918.

[A new theatre, Teatro Campoamor, was subsequently built on the site. It was demolished after a some years in favour of the Palacio de los Asturianos.]
