Opened 1916 as "Kinoteatr Mikado". 1920-1923 known as "Baku Free Critical and Propaganda Theater", 1923 renamed "Rabochy Teatr" (Workers' Theatre). Later renamed "State Russian Drama Theatre named after Səməd Vurğun" in honour of the Azerbaijani-Soviet writer, Səməd Vurğun (1906-1956).
