Country: Australia State: New South Wales City: Sydney Location: 258 Pitt Street / corner of Park Street Built 1886 by George R. Johnson. Opened 27 December 1886. 991 seats. Partially rebuilt 1892 by Backhouse and Laidley. 1905 interior alterations (over 1300 seats). Used for drama performances, for almost 50 years as Sydney's major intimate playhouse. Closed 13 July 1935. Subsequently demolished to make way for the widening of Park Street. The Criterion Hotel now occupies what remained of the site. |
