The Prince of Wales Opera House, onf of Gulgong's three 'rough built thetatre and stages where the world's best actors trod' (Henry Lawson) was established in 1871 by John Hart Cogden, a member of the Iron Clad Minstrels group. It was here, beneath the roof of this historic Opera House, that the grande dame of Australian legend, 'Matilda' first taught the dolg-diggers the waltz!
