Opened in autumn 1908 with a series of opening events, including a performance of Gounod's opera "Faust" by the Metropolitan Opera Company. Later renamed "BAM Peter Jay Sharp Building" in honour of the real-estate businessman and philanthropist, Peter Jay Sharp. The building contains the Howard Gilman Opera House (2,109 seats, named after the philanthropist Howard Gilman) and BAM Rose Cinemas (formerly Carey Playhouse), Lepercq Space (originally a ballroom) and Hillman Attic Studio.
