Built 1997-2000 by Michael Wilford. Named in honour of the painter, L S Lowry (1887-1976). Opened 28 April 2000.

The building contains two theatres: Lyric Theatre (1730 seats) and Quays Theatre (466 seats). Used for drama, opera, ballet, dance, musicals, children's shows, popular music, jazz, folk and comedy. The complex also includes large gallery spaces, conference rooms, a restaurant, bars, and cafés.
