Country: England, United Kingdom City: London Borough: London Borough of Bromley Location: Sydenham Hill/Penge; Crystal Palace Parade Cast-iron and glass structure, built in Hyde Park (City of Westminster) as an exhibition palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851. 1854 translocated to Sydenham Hill and fitted as an exhibition and multi-purpose concert hall, with installation of a large orchestra and chorus stand around a pipe organ and an auditorium of 4000 seats. From 1857, venue of the annual "Great Handel Festival" featuring large-scale oratorio performances with 2000 singers and an orchestra of 500. Also used for other concerts and events.
