First venue on the site opened 1849 as "The Theatre". 1868 rebuiling, re-opened 29 Aug 1868 as "Theatre Royal". 1883 rebuilding. 1897 rebuilding by Bertie Crewe. Re-opened 20 Sep 1897 as "Empire Theatre of Varieties". 1898-1899 rebuilding, re-opened 30 July 1899 as "New Theatre Royal". 1908 renamed "Hippodrome". 1910 rebuilding by Frank Matcham. Ca. 1942 converted into a cinema. 1946 renamed "Hippodrome Picture Theatre". Closed 1956. Subsequently demolished.
