Destroyed by fire in May 1886, leavinf only the exterior walls. Subsequently rebuilt to the same designs by Oliver Essex and re-opened 13 Nov 1886 with Vincent Wallace's opera "Maritana". 1899 alterations by Frank Matcham. Closed 9 Dec 1950. 1958 converted into a dance hall, destryoing the complete interior. Re-opened 1959 as "Locarno" ballroom.
