Opened 6 Nov 1893 as "Empire Palace of Varieties" (1433 seats). 1903 renamed "Empire and Hippodrome Theatre", 1920 renamed "Empire Theatre". 1931 converted into a cinema. Damaged by fire on 2 Feb 1951. Subsequently rebuilt and reopened as "New Empire Theatre". Closed 21 Aug 1954. 1955-1962 used as a BBC radio studio, also known as "BBC Theatre".
