Location: Barmen, Kurt-Drees-Straße 4 (Friedrich-Engels-Allee 410 / Spinnstraße 4)

Built 1902-1905 by Carl Moritz as "Stadttheater Barmen" on the site of the previous Stadttheater (destroyed by a fire in 1902). Opened 1905. Destroyed by bombs on 30 May 1943. 1951-1956 rebuilding by Friedrich Hetzelt, retaining only some exterior details of the original design. Re-opened 14 Oct 1956 with Paul Hindemith's opera "Mathis der Maler". Additions in the 1970s. Closed 2003 due to safety concerns. 2006-2009 major restoration. Re-opened 18 Jan 2009. Used for opera and drama performances by the resident Wuppertaler Bühnen company.
