Built as concert hall "Philharmonie". 1931 renamed "Gewerkschaftshaus", subsequently used for trade union events. Since 1943, used as a theatre by the municipal theatre companies. 1951 renamed "Volkstheater". 1975-1977 major rebuilding. Reopened 16 Jan 1977. Used by the resident opera, drama, and ballet companies.
