Built 1952-1953. Originally planned by Heinz Kiel as a theatre and cinema, re-planned as a theatre proper during construction by the communal building office. Opened 6 Feb 1953 with Beethoven's "Fidelio" (performed by the Oberhausen theatre). From 1953, mainly used as a cinema and for occasional theatre performances. Since 1959, used as a guest venue for opera and drama performances by touring companies, for concerts and for various other events. Also used for the annual "Adolf-Grimme-Preis" TV awards presentation. 1979 rebuildings. 1997-1998 major renovation and stagehouse extension, building of a new theatre restaurant.
