Working class community centre and trade unions' house with a multi-purpose hall, built 1904-1906 by Oscar Schade for Volkshaus GmbH, a consortium of 40 workers' associations. Opened 15 June 1906 as "Volkshaus". Severely damaged by artillery fire on 19 March 1920 during the right-wing extremist "Kapp-Putsch". Subsequently rebuilt and extended. 1928 damaged by fire. During the Nazi regime used by the Nazi organizations SA and KdF. Damaged by bombs in World War II. Rebuilt 1945. Renamed "Ernst-Thälmann-Haus" and used as offices of the GDR union FDGB. After 1990 used by several trade unions. Used as restaurant, retail space and as trade unions' offices.
