Frankfurt am Main: Alte Oper |
Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Hessen City: Frankfurt am Main Location: Opernplatz 1 (Bockenheimer Tor) Built 1873-1880 as "Opernhaus" by Richard Lucae and, after Lucae's death in 1877, Eduard Giesenberg. Opened 20 Oct 1880 with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni". Severely damaged by bombs on 23 March 1944. After plans to demolish the ruin, a citizen's initiative "Rettet das Opernhaus" was formed in 1953. Rebuilt as a concert hall with modern interior in the 1970s until 1981. Re-opened 28 Aug 1981 as "Alte Oper" with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8. The building contains two concert halls: "Großer Saal" (ca. 2500 seats) and "Mozart-Saal" (ca. 700 seats). Notable world premieres:
