Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Nordrhein-Westfalen City: Düsseldorf Location: Heinrich-Heine-Allee 16a Built 1873-1875 as "Stadttheater" by Ernst Giese. Opened 29 November 1875 with Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen". 1891 extension and electrification. 1906 major interior rebuilding by Hermann vom Endt. 1925 renamed "Opernhaus". Auditorium completely destroyed by bombs on 28 January 1943 and 3 November 1943. Subsequently rebuilt. Re-opened 1 May 1944 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Closed 1 September 1944. Re-opened 15 July 1945 with a concert. Re-opened as a theatre 9 October 1945 with Puccini's "Tosca". Site of the first session of the "Landtag" parliament of the newly-formed state Nordrhein-Westfalen on 2 Oct l946. Rebuilt 1954-1956. Re-opened 22 April 1956 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Capacity: originally 1410 seats, 1944: 1041 seats, today: 1342 seats. Since 1956, home to the "Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg" opera company (together with the Stadttheater Dusiburg).
