Open-air theatre, built 1936 by Werner March as a Nazi "Thingstätte". Part of the "Reichssportfeld" complex built for the 1936 Olympic Games. Named "Dietrich-Eckart-Bühne" after the German author and friend of Adolf Hitler, Dietrich Eckart (1868-1923). Opened 2 Aug 1936 with the world premiere of E. W. Möller's Nazi "Thing" drama, "Frankenburger Würfelspiel" (with over 1000 performers). After World War II, renamed "Waldbühne" [forest stage]. 1982 installation of a stage roof. 22,000 seats. Currently used for pop and classical concerts, and as an open-air cinema.
