Country: Switzerland (Schweiz/Suisse/Svizzera/Svizera) Canton: Basel-Stadt City: Basel Location: Steinenberg / Barfüsserplatz First venue on the site built 1824-1826 by Melchior Berri as a club house, restaurant and concert and multi-purpose event hall. 1876 extension by the "Musiksaal", a concert hall (1500 seats) by Johann Jakob Stehlin d. J. 1897 venue of the first World Zionist Congress (which would later be held there another nine times until 1946). 1938-1941 replacement of the original Berri building by Kehlstadt and Brodtbeck, while the Musiksaal remained. Re-opened 17 Dec 1939. 1970-1974, 1978-1982 and 1987-1991 rebuildings and renovations. 2016-2020 major rebuilding and extension by Herzog & de Meuron. Home to Sinfonieorchester Basel.
