• Richard Wigmore in "Gramophone", 1/1998: "[...] Schubert's last Mass also receives a fine, traditional performance under Erich Leinsdorf: grandly scaled, broadly and flexibly paced, with a close attention to the composer's detailed accents and dynamic markings that pays particular dividends in, say, the shuddering, apocalyptic 'Domine Deus' (magnificent snarling trombones here) and the equally anguished 'Agnus Dei'. The chorus are recorded with plenty of presence, though not at the expense of the orchestra. A special attraction for some will be the name of Fritz Wunderlich in the solo line-up: but ardently as he sings in the 'Et incarnatus est', he does tend to overwhelm his colleagues, especially Pilar Lorengar, whose limpid tone and exquisite phrasing are a prime source of pleasure in the 'Benedictus' and 'Dona nobis pacem'.
  There is, though, one serious drawback about this performance: following a practice fairly common at the time, Leinsdorf excises a huge chunk from each of the long fugues in the 'Gloria' and 'Credo'." [on Testament CD SBT 1111]
