Country: India City: [touring theatre] Hindi theatre company, founded 1944 by the actor and theatre manager, Prithviraj Kapoor. The Prithvi Theatre was a travelling theatre company of 150 dedicated actors, stagehands, cooks, writers and technicians, performing plays throughout the country. First premiere: Kalidasa's "Shakuntala" in 1944. The company toured India for many years. Later, under the direction of Prithviraj Kapoor's son, Shashi, the company merged with the Indian Shakespeare theatre company, "Shakespeareana". In 1978 the company moved to a permanent home, the "Prithvi Theatre" in Mumbai/Bombay (opened 5 November 1978). Link: prithvitheatre.org |
