Built 1935-1939 for the "Sociedade Dramático Musical Carlos Gomes" (formerly "Sociedade Teatral Frohsinn"). Named in honour of the Brazilian opera composer, Carlos Gomes (1836-1896). Opened 1 July 1939 with Weber's "Preziosa". 1968 addition of a smaller stage. In the 1990s, main stage restored and renamed "Auditório Heinz Geyer" in honour of the theatre's first musical director. 1996-1996 small stage rebuilt and renamed "Auditório Willy Sievert".
