Built 1946-1947. Opened 13 Aug 1947 as "Culver Theatre", a cinema with 1160 seats. Closed 1989. 1994 damaged by an earthquake. Subsequently auditorium demolished as part of an asbestos removal programme. 2002-2004 major rebuilding as a live theatre with two halls (350 and 100 seats). 2004 re-opened as "Kirk Douglas Theatre", named after the American actor, Kirk Douglas (1916-2020).
