Country: England, United Kingdom Historic County: Warwickshire City: Stratford-on-Avon Built 1879 by William Frederick Unsworth. Named in honour of the Stratford-born English playwright, poet, and actor, William Shakespeare (ca.1564-1616). The complex comprised a theatre wing and a library and museum wing, linked by a galleried bridge. Various alterations 1889-1913. Theatre wing destroyed by a fire in 1926, leaving only a shell. Subsequently, a new "Shakespeare Memorial Theatre" was built next to the ruin in 1932. The remaining shell was incorporated into the new complex by Elisabeth Scott as conference centre and rehearsal rooms. 1986 rebuilt as a theatre by Michael Reardon, re-opened as "Swan Theatre" (464 seats) and "Ashcroft Room".
