First venue on the site opened 1835 as "West Kent Theatre". 1837 renamed "Duchess of Kent's Theatre". 1880 alterations. 1892 rebuilding by Edward Clark and re-opened as "Theatre Royal". 1892 renamed "Barnard's Theatre". 1900 rebuilding by Frank Matcham. Ca. 1450 seats. Renamed "Empire Theatre" in the 1920s. Closed 1958. Demolished in 1960.
