Built by North & Robins. Opened 8 June 1908 as "Empire Palace of Varieties". 2500 seats. Used as a variety theatre and for cinema screenings. 1920 converted into a cinema. Re-opened 22 Mar 1920 as "Empire Super Cinema" (1160 seats). 1950 reenamed "Gaumont Cinema". 1953 modernisations. Destroyed 2 Jan 1954 by a fire.

[In 1956, a new cinema ("Gaumont", later "Odeon" and "Parkway Cinema") was built on the site.]
