Built by Ferdinando Tacca. Opened 7 Feb 1656 with Jacopo Melani's opera "Il potestà di Colognole". The building contains two halls: "Sala Grande", also known as "Teatro Massimo" (1500 seats), and "Saloncino Paolo Poli", a former ballroom used as a concert hall since 1804 (400 seats). 1855-1857 interior rebuilding. Currently used for drama performances throughout the year, and for opera performances during the annual "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino" festival.
