Built 1935-1936 as "Grenzlandtheater" by Hermann Alker with Alfred Hopp. Opened 27 September 1936 with Weber's "Der Freischütz". Also known as "Stadttheater". Later renamed "Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater" in honour of the German playwright, Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946). 1963-1988 home to the "Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater" drama company (while the opera company resided in the Görlitz Stadttheater). 571 seats.
