Built 1952-1955 as "Kulturpalast des VEB Maxhütte 'Johannes R. Becher'" by Hanns Hopp, Josef Kaiser, Thomas Reimer. Garden designs by Wladimir Rubinow. Opened on 13 Oct 1955. Name in honour of the German author and politican, Johannes R. Becher (1891-1958). Also known as "Kulturhaus VEB Maxhütte". The complex contains a main theatre hall (800 seats), a chamber concert hall ("Musiksalon", 200 seats), a ballet rehearsal room, lecture rooms, a library, various function rooms, and two restaurants. After 1990, used as a venue for the Maxhüttenensemble theatre group and as a furniture warehouse.
