Rheinsberg: Schlosstheater

Country: Germany (Deutschland)
State: Brandenburg
District: Landkreis Ostprignitz-Ruppin
City: Rheinsberg
Location: Kavalierhaus

Built 1774 for Prince Heinrich von Preußen within the "Kavalierhaus" guest house, replacing a previous theatre. Also known as "Schauspielhaus". Used for regular seasons of opera and drama performances, twice a week from March to November. Closed 1802 after Prince Heinrich's death. None of the later inhabitants of the castle ever revived the theatre. Destroyed by a fire during the last days of World War II in 1945 when the palace district was plundered. 1999 exterior rebuilt to the original plans, interior rebuilt as a theatre to modern plans (300 seats). Re-opened 1999 with Siegfrid Matthus's opera "Kronprinz Friedrich". Currently used for opera performances and concerts by the "Musikakademie Rheinsberg" and the "Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg".
