Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Niedersachsen District: Landkreis Hildesheim City: Hildesheim Location: Theaterstraße 6 Built 1908-1909 by Max Littmann as a private theatre for the theatre director Oscar Lange, on the site of a previoius theatre hall ("Knaub'sches Etablissement") and partly using existing buildings. Opened 2 Oct 1909 with Carl Maria von Weber's "Jubel-Ouverture" and Friedrich Schiller's "Die Jungfrau von Orléans". From 1922, operated as municipal theatre by the city of Hildesheim. Closed Aug 1944. Completely destroyed by bombs on 22 March 1945 (with only the exterior walls and the façade remaining). Rebuilt 1947-1949. Re-opened 10 September 1949 with Lessing's "Nathan der Weise". 1997 renovations. Originally 800 seats, today 673 seats. 2007 the company was fusioned with Landesbühne Hannover to form the new "Theater für Niedersachsen (TfN). After the Hannover home of that company was closed in 2010, Stadttheater Hildesheim is again the only home to the opera, musical and drama companies of the fusioned theatre.
