Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Sachsen-Anhalt City: Halle (Saale) Location: Universitätsring 24 / Joliot-Curie-Platz Built 1884-1886 by Heinrich Seeling. Opened 9 Oct 1886 as "Stadttheater" with Friedrich Schiller's plays "Wallensteins Lager" and "Die Piccolomini". Severely damaged by bombs on 31 March 1945. 1948-1951 rebuilding by Kurt Hemmerling to simplified designs (without the cupola roof). Re-opened 1951 as "Theater des Friedens" [Peace Theatre]. 1968 interior rebuilding. Used by performances of the "Landestheater Halle" ensembles. 1992 renamed "Opernhaus Halle". Used for opera and ballet performances by the resident ensembles. Also used for opera peformances during the annual "Händel-Festspiele".
