Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Bayern District: Landkreis Cham City: Furth im Wald Location: Stadtplatz Folk play around the killing of a dragon that developed from dramatic features (probably around Saint George) in a Corpus Christi procession first mentioned in 1590. Since 1887 a secular dramatic play is anually performed in August on the town square "Stadtplatz". From 1951 to 2006, a dramatic version (set in the times of the Hussite Wars) by Josef Martin Bauer was performed. Since 2007, a dramatic version by Alexander Etzel-Ragusa is performed that was premiered as an alternate version in 2006. The dragon figure was changed several times to keep up with modern technology. Before 1913, a simple riding costume was used. In 1913, a dragon prop from the opera "Siegfried" could be purchased from the Munich court opera house. After World War II until 1974 bigger, more modern versions were used. From 1974 until 2009 a mechanical dragon nicknamed "Lisbeth" based on a forklift truck was used (now shown in the "Landestormuseum" in summer). Since 2010, a new dragon figure named "Tradinno" (nicknamed "Fanny") is used. It is the largest walking robot in the world and was built at the cost of 2.5 million Euros. It weighs 11 tons, can walk with a speed up to 12.5 km/h and can breathe fire. It is shown in the "Drachenhöhle am Festplatz" in summer and in the "Landestormuseum" in winter.
