[1st theatre on the site built 1798 by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, 1820 rebuilding, destroyed by fire on 7 Mar 1855.]

Built 1856 as "Herzogliches Hoftheater" by Friedrich Kretzschmar for duke Leopold IV of Anhalt-Dessau. Opened 27 Oct 1856 with Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable". 1918 donated to a public foundation by duke Friedrich II of Anhalt, and renamed "Friedrich-Theater" in his honour. Destroyed by a fire on 5 Jan 1922, with only the façade surviving. Remains converted into a café and operated as "Kaffee Altes Theater". Destroyed in World War II.
