Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Hessen City: Darmstadt Location: Karolinenplatz 3 Built 1817-1819 as "Großherzogliches Hoftheater" (court theatre of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt) by Georg Moller. Opened 7 Nov 1819 with Gaspare Spontini's opera "Fernand Cortez oder die Eroberung von Mexiko". Ca. 2000 seats. The mostly wooden theatre was nearly completely destroyed by fire on 24 Oct 1871. 1875-1879 rebuilding by Christian Horst. Opened 19 Oct 1879 with Richard Wagner's opera "Lohengrin". 1226 seats. 1904-1905 major interior rebuilding by Hermann Helmer, with addition of an attic storey. Reopened 17 Sep 1905 with Richard Wagner's opera "Der fliegende Holländer". 1919 renamed "Landestheater". Nearly completely destroyed by bombs on 11/12 Sep 1944. Ruin secured by an emergency roof after the war. 1970-1994 rebuilding as an archive building. Facade, ground floor foyer and staircase remodeled after the 1879 plans. Re-opened 3 Feb 1994 as an archive. Later renamed "Haus der Geschichte". Notable world premieres:
