Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Berlin City: Berlin Location: Mitte, Kapelle-Ufer (fomerly: Friedrich-Karl-Ufer 1) / Unterbaumstraße Built 1887-1888 by Julius Hennicke and Hermann Philipp von der Hude for the theatre director Oscar Blumenthal, replacing a the circus building "Zirkus Krembser". Opened 11 September 1888 with Lessing's "Nathan der Weise". Named in honour of the German playwright, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). Originally 1100 seats (+ 60 standing), later 1033 seats. Destroyed by bombs in April 1945. Notable world premieres:
