Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Nordrhein-Westfalen District: Städteregion Aachen City: Aachen Location: Theaterplatz 19 Built 1823-1825 by Johann-Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1124 seats). Opened 1825 with Louis Spohr's "Jessonda". 1900-1901 rebuilding by Heinrich Seeling: alterations of auditorium (1014 seats) and exterior (maintaining Cremer's portico). Destroyed by a fire after bombings on 14 July 1943. 1948-1951 restoration by Philipp Kerz without the two front towers and with a modern auditorium (942 seats). Re-opened 23 Dec 1951 with Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". 1975 auditorium alterations (905 seats). 1995 renovations. Links: theateraachen.de, Wikipedia |
