Country: France Region: Occitanie (Languedoc-Roussillon) Department: Aude City: Carcassonne Open-air theatre, built 1908-1909 as "Théâtre en plein air de la Cité" within the medieval fortifictaions of the city of Carcassonne, after an idea by Dr. Jean Sempé. Opened 26 July 1908 with Henri de Bornier's "La Fille de Roland", played by the ensemble of the Comédie-Française. Ca. 5000 seats. Later renamed "Grand Théâtre de la Cité". Since 1957, used for theatre and opera performances as well as concerts by the annual summer "Festival de la Cité". 2006 renamed "Théâtre Jean-Deschamps" in honour of the French actor, Jean Deschamps (1920-2007). |
