Built 1887-1894 by Román Guerrero, replacing the former "Teatro Español" (built 1802-1807 as "Teatro del Príncipe", which had replaced the 1745 "Teatro del Príncipe", renamed 1849). Opened 12 Jan 1895 with Agustín Moreto's "El desdén, con el desdén". 1925-1929 renovations and rebuilding by Pablo Aranda, Luis Bellido and Enrique Colás. Severely damaged by a fire on 19 Oct 1975. Subsequently rebuilt by Lucio Oñro. 763 seats.
