Wien: Theater an der Wien |
Country: Austria (Österreich) State: Wien City: Wien Location: 6.; Linke Wienzeile 6 / Millöckergasse Built 1798-1801 for Emanuel Schikaneder by Franz Jäger, Anton Jäger, and Joseph Reymund. Opened 13 June 1801 with a prologue by Emanuel Schikaneder and Teyber's opera "Alexander". Named "Theater an der Wien" [Theatre on the banks of the Wien] after the nearby Wien river. From 1803 to 1805 Ludwig van Beethoven lived in the theatre building, where he composed parts of his opera "Leonore" (which later became "Fidelio"). In 1902 Ferdinand Fellner & Hermann Helmer built a 5-storey apartment house above the theatre's Wienzeile wing. From 1945 to 1955 home to the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble (together with the Volksoper building). Closed 1955 due to safety concerns. 1960-1962 renovation by O. Niedermoser. From 1983 to 1988 used for performances of A. L. Webber's musical "Cats", later for various operetta and musical theatre performances as well as for opera performances during the "Wiener Festwochen" festival. Since 2006, again used as an opera house. Notable world premieres:
